Parish Nursing is a church-based health ministry to the whole person—mind,
body, and spirit—that assists in the maintenance of the health and wellness of
church members and the community.
This ministry arises from the needs of the congregation and sees it's fruition
through the talents of registered nurses who combine clinical skills with
pastoral interest. They work along with a team of volunteers who provide
different types of services to their church family.
The Parish Nurse Ministry presents the concept of a caring family reaching
out to those in need by being creative partners with and servants to the
community whose quality of life and health they wish to enhance.
The concept of Parish Nursing originated in 1984, with the work of Rev.
Granger Westberg at Lutheran General Hospital, Park Ridge, Illinois. He believed
that churches were a natural agency to assist their congregation and the
community at large in achieving optimal holistic health. Education programs for
health ministers/parish nurses have been established and are now being offered
by various hospitals and home health agencies across the country.
